Not too Old, yet.

One of the things that constantly shocks me are the things I don’t know.  Once firmly out of my horrible teen years, I am pretty sure that I don’t know it all; however, I’m thinking more about the things that shock me that I didn’t know.  So, it is in this vein that I bring you the Monday List of What I learned recently.

  1. All foods will taste better when they are
    1.  Free.  (Tasting samples are awesome.)
    2. Consumed outside (like at a Farmer’s Market)
    3. Messy (like perhaps a SINGLE Bing Cherry that Duke somehow managed to eat, give himself a Cherry mustache, and coat both hands and arms — to his elbows.)
  2. Duke has grown at least a foot since last year’s farmer’s market.  He spent two hours scaling all the climbing parts of the playground with such ease, you’d think we had a rock climbing wall in the backyard. (Perhaps I should let him climb the ‘Hill Zone’ in the backyard?)
  3. When asked to clean your room, it is best if you declare that you “can’t do it” while you are putting your toys away.  Because that helps SO much.
  4. A compost heap is HEAVY when you have to turn it weekly — and my back doesn’t seem to love me anymore.  Also, it seems that it is actually composting — which shocks me on all levels.
  5. There are few things harder in this world than to not laugh when you have to get your child to stop something and he turns around with this look of shock on his face that you’d tell him to stop (you know, something minor like using his Tinkertoys as drum sticks and beating on the TV — as an example) and then he says, “But, Mama, you my buddy” and continues.  Um…I may or may not have had to leave the room first.
  6. It is possible that my son may be more capable of matching his clothing than my husband.  Last night Duke wanted to wear his “Rocket Pants” (his pj pants with rockets) but he couldn’t find the matching shirt.  I offered a white tee and he said, “no, if Rocket shirt is dirty, then I’ll wear my car shirt.”  I figured he’d keep his rocket pants on — but OH, NO — with the car shirt comes the car pants.  Hello, he isn’t 4 yet and he has an opinion on his PJs MATCHING???
  7. And, finally, it is impossible to explain to a three (nearly 4 year old) that no matter how much he wants to, we can not just go to the airport, go through the tunnel (security), find our gate, go down the ramp, and find our seats; right this very minute.  I’ve tried to pull the calendar down and count the days to the next airplane ride, but for a child who can count to 20 — 90+ days is a LONG time or it is tomorrow — I just can’t tell.  All I know is that Duke wants to ride in an airplane again NOW and visit the Queen Mum.  What I’m also sure of is that 1 hour into the ride he’ll be asking to get back on the ground again.

Here’s hoping you learned as much as I did this weekend.

There’s nothing quite like a little boy to wrap his mommy around his finger. Bring pictures Thursday, okay?
