Four is Exhausting for the Adults
My boy, my FOUR year old boy, went to sleep last night talking about waking up and being FOUR. No, I have no idea why he wanted to be four so badly — other than he’s been looking forward to his birthday since April (not at all like his mother, who never mentions her upcoming birthday randomly and possibly to strangers). However, there is NO way that his dreams of being four included me working since 6:30am and being completely exhausted.
This morning, Duke crawls into my bed this morning, sleeply declaring “I four.” “Yes, Buddy, Happy Birthday.”
He asked for cupcakes for breakfast. (Um, no. later.)
He asked for presents. (Um, later.)
I usher the boys out the door, make a pot of coffee and get to work.
You remember when we vacuumed his room? Well, that was just the beginning.
It began with a fort. Special thanks to Mir, for her scoping out a $200 fort for about $20 — Seriously, no one could have resisted. Then I used it as an excuse to CLEAN OUT THE ROOM!!!
This is the result of FOUR more bags (in addition to this weekend’s 7) of stuff gone. I moved every single piece of furniture in his room. And frankly, isn’t that fort the coolest??? (When he gets too old for the fort, I may have to take it and hang it in my room. In fact, don’t tell him, but I may take my laptop in his room and work while he’s at school. I knew I should have gotten myself one too.)
Then, I took cupcakes to school. But because I’m the awesome mommy, I brought Birthday hats AND those silly blower things. We sang (SO off-key), the kids ate cupcakes, and then we came home. From the second we left, Duke begged for another cupcake. (Um, no. Later.)
We came home and what do you think that Duke said after his mommy spent most of the day cleaning, re-doing, re-making his room into the very vision of a 4 year’s dream???
“What happened to my room?”
“BIRTHDAY totally happened to your room.”
(And in case you were worried, birthday will be happening almost all month — I may just be forced to live on sugar — it is tough life.)

Very, very cool. Might be a neat place to read or knit!

We are so coming over and playing. In fact, I think Duke needs to have 2 awesome friends come and sleep over…
I’ll make sure to send lots of meds!
