No title can contain fire, coffee, and blueberries and make sense
October 25th, 2007Yesterday was an awesome day - and you know how rarely I say that when it doesn’t involved traveling somewhere cool or the words “Queen, get thee to a spa — someone else is paying.” Alas, it was a great day….
…if by good you mean totally exhausting, nothing truly accomplished, and good mail — then yes, by those standards I’ve not only had a good day, I’m working on a stellar life.
First, work was a problem solving day. I know it seems odd to say, but it was just one of those days where you wear your fire helmet all day because you are putting out fires as fast as they light (regrets to my friends in SoCal, as the reference may be a bit too warm — stay cool and try to look at this as a chance to roast marshmallows, k?) Back to me, I was a problem solving fool. Which was nice, since my to do list didn’t progress a single inch — I literally put no checkmarks on my list, yet the day flew by because I was hustling to deal with the latest flare up. Ah, it was a day.
However, I was in the middle of one fire and the lovely FedEx man appears bearing gifts. It seems that the lovely, Maxine, caved to my greatest loves Cookies and Coffee. Homemade Cookies (they smell divine) and Starbucks coffee. But the best part is when I e-mailed to thank her, she e-mails me back, “I forgot to put in the note that you can take the bag to any Starbucks and they will grind it for you, but I’m thinking someone who likes her coffee like you might have a grinder.” And yes, Maxine, I do — in fact, when I was grinding said coffee this morning, it allowed me to enjoy my fourth favorite thing in the world — Duke’s Coffee Dance. (Don’t ask, it is hard to explain, but Duke loves to dance around the kitchen to the beat of the coffee grinder — does anyone else think I might should have held off on the coffee while pregnant? Yeah, me neither.)
Next, last night was bowling night. Well, except I’m not bowling this season. I’ve decided that instead of paying the overpriced babysitter to watch Duke sleep, I would stay home, feed him a good dinner and have a little Mama/Boy time. So, I pick up the boy and instantly declare that we have the most fun plan in the whole wide world!!!! “We need to buy cat food, kitty litter, and blueberries.” I only threw the last one in because I knew he wouldn’t be able to control himself after the kitty litter. Alas, those store trips were fun. The pet store was kind enough to leave one poor lady up front by herself with a growing line; when they FINALLY opened a new line, the people BEHIND me jumped ahead of me. I was thrilled. Duke was not happy.
Then we went to TWO stores on the search of blueberries — because I know how to have fun. Thing I didn’t know was that blueberries are NOT in season. (I ought to take my lumps right here and right now — the royal household buys little fresh fruits and veggies. In fact, I never think about seasonality because we buy so few the extra money for out of season fruit doesn’t amount to much. Now, the crunchy people in my life are having a heart attack, but seriously, I barely cook one meal a day — and frankly, I cook dinner about 3 nights a week — including the weekend– so, I deal with frozen veggies and the occasional batch of strawberries and blueberries.) Back to my out of season blueberries. I am willing to pay a large sum of money for fresh blueberries, I was prepared in fact to do so. I was not however expecting not to be able FIND blueberries at all in any store. When did this happen and more importantly, when the heck IS blueberry season? I settled for frozen, but this will not satisfy my son NEED for blueberries. So, um, that was fun.
We get home and bond over making dinner while Duke enjoyed his new love of the pre-reading show Super Why (personally, I’m looking forward to bonding over ‘Between the Lions’, but that might just be me). Then Duke declared it time for bed and off he went — leaving me to watch him sleep (or CSI, either one) and NOT get paid like the sitter.
Oh and I went to bed at 9:30pm — because I was pooped from the firefighting and the blueberry hunting.

There’s a season for blueberries? No way! I would never have known that either.

Blueberries - I think the season is about July - August, but I swear I saw some at Trader Joe’s a few weeks ago. TJ’s & Costco also carry dried blueberries, which are much more delicious then frozen!

After the last batch of Costco blueberries was full of sad little berries and quite a few bad ones a month ago, I told my sweetie to only hunt-and-gather the frozen ones for now. The frozen bags at Costco have the wonderful monster berries, and if you just warm them up rather than cook them, well, that’s been my favorite snack the last few days. And that’s saying something, since I came home from my own trip with serious food poisoning and wasn’t eating much at all. Blueberries, though, can’t live without’em.
Think I’ll go zap me a bowl again. You enabler you.

G’wan. Starve your avid readers like that. No blog posts? That’s like, it must be like, you know, no coffee or something!
