Random with Promise

March 7th, 2008

Ok, so I know I owe you a post (or four).  But I have too much to tell you that it is taking a bit to share it all.  So, I am going to have to give you snippets…

We found the elementary school.  I’m thrilled actually, which I didn’t think was possible.  In fact, I keep thinking that given my attitude going into this that I found an acceptable place to warp Duke’s mind is amazing.  I think I shall love this school mostly because I may have a crush on the principal.  She is no nonsense and kind; with it and progressive without losing any of the discipline you want at her level.  The woman is in charge and you can feel it — and not in a bitchy way.  So yes, I picked my son’s school because of the teacher and not the free salad bar.

Prince is equally as confident in our decision and I’ve begun to put the school dates in our family calendar and the planning side of me is trying to sort out a new life working around a school calendar.  Also, I keep wondering what extra things I need to have in Duke’s life.  Should he have music or a sport or an art class?  The school he going to has an amazing after school program one day a week that is hands on science and I keep thinking about that too.  So many choices.

The thing Prince isn’t thrilled with is that I’m already shopping for school clothes, backpacks, and lunchboxes.  I want to find good deals but also I’m opposed to most action heroes so I know I’m going to have to look for just the right pack and box for Dukes 3 hours and 20 minute days.  Prince thinks I’ve lost my mind.

Prince had to work this evening and I’m home with Duke and making dinner.  Duke begins to sing silly songs and then stops and looks at me and says:

“Hey diddle diddle

The cat and the fiddle

The cow jumped over the moon

The little dog laughed to see such a sight (Stopped with a BIG GRIN)

And the dish said, ‘Let’s run away to China.’”

Um, what?  I asked him to repeat it. He did.  And he started to giggle a bit.  And I laughed out loud.  My son is really funny — or at least repeating funny things.

Big plans in the royal family this weekend — a trip to IKEA.  I know, I know — you could not be more jealous.  We need more tumblers for Duke and I’m hoping for maybe new bed linens.  In truth, I think I want to go to the Scandinavian bedding of two twin duvets so that we can stop fighting over the covers.  I have a feeling that Prince is going to be opposed to the idea, but I keep thinking ‘why not.’  So, alas, I think we will be enjoying an adventure at IKEA, what with the meatballs AND the playroom.  Who could resist.

Somehow despite the excitement of IKEA, laundry will still need to get done — not really sure why the laundry fairy doesn’t seem to appear in my house and frankly, I want to know why?  Did we not pay our Laundry Fairy dues?

  1. There is no laundry fairy! Gosh knows I wish there was!

Congrats on finding a school for Prince!

  2. Sorry - the laundry fairy is across the country right now, visiting my house. I’ll send her back when I’m done.

  3. Two comforters solves everything for two people of different heights. It solves everything for two people of different body temperatures. Let me though make a case for two queen or king size comforters. On those occasions on a cold winter night when you wish to short-term share the comforter, a twin size is just not going to cut it and will leave one of you out in the cold (did I make the comment G-rated enough?). And, as long as we’re on the subject, should one of you be, on rare occasions, um, I don’t know, let’s call it socially unacceptable, he/she keeps it confined under his/her own comforter rather than forcing you to share! Two comforters, the way to go…I’m just saying….

  4. #1 - I vote sport. One of the things I’m really sorry I haven’t been able to do with the lad is get him into sports. If, for no other reason than the great teamwork building it provides.

#b - There is a laundry fairy? Really? Is this one of those cool things like the electric kettle that everyone has been keeping from me? Totally not fair.
