Should I be giving the child an allowance?

So, Daylight Savings Time has hit one member in this house harder than the rest of us — Duke.  Poor Duke, is sleeping LATE every morning.  He’s not been his cheerful self in days and getting him moving has, in a word, sucked.

Since I have also been less than perky in the mornings this week (hello late nights, no sleep — AGAIN, and Daylight Savings Time) Monday and Tuesday were more about pouring a boneless child into clothing than a good morning.  But today, I woke up and thought, “I want to go back to sleep”  — no wait, that doesn’t help us.  I thought I’d try something different…something like FUN…

So, I wake Duke up a bit and I begin to sing (which, Duke happens to HATE to hear me sing — since I’m incapable of finding a tune or a key).  I begin with a little round of Berlin’s “Oh, I Hate to Get Up in the Morning”  (giggle)  Then a quick round of “Rise and Shine” (silence)….a shot a “This is the Day”…(movement)  Ok, this might do the trick.  Duke got dressed and did his morning chore of walking the dog.

Now, Duke has been learning about feelings and emotions at school, so he took a quick survey of the household mental health. “Dad, how are you feeling today?”  “Good, sleepy though.”  “Mama, you feeling good?” “I’m happy, Buddy, what about you?” “I tired.”

For reasons I don’t understand, this exchange caused me to burst out with a round of “If You’re Happy and You Know It…”  This tickled Duke.

Prince gets into the act with “If you’re happy and you know it, give Dad $10.”

Finally, Duke begins to sing, “If you’re happy and you know it, give me a quarter.”

We are all giggling and having fun, then Duke suddenly stops and says, “I’m going to have to tell my friends at school about this.”  I have this strange feeling that pre-school will be all about what money you have to give me because I’m happy and I know it….

Well, at least it was only a quarter!

    Sounds like a good morning!

Too funny. I would have loved to hear what he actually said when he got to school.

Oh – and a card I almost got for my brother’s 30th the other day (but found a better one) – “If you’re old and you know it creak your knees!”

To be a fly (no, wait, butterfly sounds better) on the wall…
